In hospice news there are new developments that we thought you might not know about.  There have been improvements over the last several years.

What’s New in Hospice Care

Emotional and Spiritual Support – Greater emphasis it not offered for emotional and spiritual support for patients and their families.  This includes counseling services, support groups, and chaplain services.

Pain Management – Providing effective pain management has been a greater focus for patients in hospice, using combinations of medications, alternative therapies, and holistic approaches.

Telehealth – Obviously since Covid, telehealth services have become more often offered, even in some hospice programs.  They are offering virtual visits and consultations to provide support for the patients and families in their homes.  If this is of interest, be sure to ask if your provider offers it.

Integrative therapies – Integrative therapies, such as music therapy, art therapy, massage, and even pet therapy are being offered my many hospice programs.  If that seems like it would help your loved one, be sure to see if your program offers this.

Advanced Care Planning – While this is not necessarily new, advanced care options may have increased in numbers since you last asked about this.  If your family would like to have conversations about advanced care and/or end of life decision-making and care choices, again be sure to inquire.

Family Caregiver Support – Hospice programs are increasingly providing support and resources for family caregivers including education, respite care, and counseling services.
